The East African craze for ‘ball room’ dance music – muziki wa dansi in Swahili – began in colonial Tanganyika back in the early 1930s. Cuban rumba records were all the rage and the urban youth organised themselves into ‘dansi clubs’ with their associated bands. These were the origins of a decade long musical phenomenon which culminated in the 1960s, under the Ujamaa policy, of state-run bands dependent on regular live performances and incentivised to compose and record successful songs.

Recorded during a time of considerable political, social and musical transition and originally released as 45rpm singles in the late 1960s, these 17 East African tracks, from Cuban Marimba Band, Tanzania Jazz Band, L'Orchestra Spear, Nuta Jazz, Morogoro Jazz Band and Atomic Jazz Band have been digitised, restored and remastered and compiled into a unique digital album.

The full album download includes a full colour 27 page PDF booklet with notes from Tanzanian music researcher and historian, Werner Graebner, as well as lyric and title translations and images of the original 45rpm labels.
